GANG STARR FOREVER
IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.
FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.
I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.
I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. That is a fantastic tribute Primo and we are all proud of these kind words and we just know that anything else that was said was just not true, you had mad love for Guru and i’m sure he had the same for you. We will all miss the Gifted one and are all deeply saddened by his loss and hip-hop will be a lot poorer for that. Gang Starr always meant so much to me growing up and the music

All I can say (and really all that need be said) is I don’t get through my Frosh/Soph college years down south, far from my NY home, without the “Step in the Arena” album. Wrote many a “remix” back then in my head walking to class or walking home extending Guru’s verses like we were a duo, always praying for a chance to hear him live, or have Premo remix my joint. But as my years went on, I appreciated the bangers that would keep my parties goin on and keep my head sane (Dwyck, Full Clip, Mass Appeal, Skills, etc). And while you didn’t have me full 100 when went into the Jazzmatazz phase, you deserved every bit of respect for doing something different, expanding your creativity. I am just disappointed we wont be able t witness a VH1 Hip Hop Honors show truly honoring you both as keepers of the Real Hip Hop when the music was really struggling with commercialism. May your soul find peace and may your friends and enemies both live only through your good times.

He influenced me greatly when I was first rhyming and never failed to come with heat. I was getting ready for the next hot Gang Starr album and celebrated when I found out he had successful surgery. Well put, heartfelt, and vividly sincere. We lost A GIANT in hip hop, our culture is richer for having had a spirit and creative force like Guru put it down. I met the brothers on numerous occasions and they’ve always been great times. I count myself amongst GSF’s biggest fans. Guru will defninitel live on thru the lives he touched through his gifts and the energy he spread. RIP to Keith Elam aka Keithy E aka Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, supreme big ups to Chris Martin aka the great DJ Premier.
